PDI (2015): Iglesia nonsense

Philippine Daily Inquirer /  August 31, 2015

THE OFFICIAL reasons given by Iglesia ni Cristo officials and spokespersons for the protest actions that began on Thursday—first at the Department of Justice in Manila, then at the Edsa Shrine in Quezon City, and then since Saturday at the intersection of Edsa and Shaw in Mandaluyong—do not make sense. They do not stand logical or legal scrutiny. Instead, they betray the surge of panic that has overtaken some of the leaders of the influential church.

To begin, not at the beginning, but at the end: The protest organizers misunderstand the longstanding doctrine of the separation of church and state, which is the main reason they have offered to justify their collective mass action. That doctrine does not mean that offenses committed internally—that is, inside the church or within the congregation—cannot be investigated by the state; if a crime is involved, or alleged, then by definition that kind of violation is an offense against “the people,” and the state is duty-bound to investigate the matter. If evidence exists of the crime, the state must prosecute the guilty to the fullest extent, to meet the ends of justice.

The separation doctrine the officials of the Iglesia ni Cristo are invoking do not grant them, or indeed any leader or member of any church, an exemption from that fundamental principle: No one is above the law.

Last week, the family of a former highly placed minister of the Iglesia ni Cristo filed a case for serious illegal detention against eight members of the church’s governing council. Isaias Samson Jr., the former chief editor of the official Iglesia publication, and his wife and son sued the officials—allegedly for detaining them for nine days in July in their own home, holding them incommunicado, confiscating their passports and subjecting them to repeated interrogation. (In the blog of the whistle-blower using the pseudonym Antonio Ramirez Ebangelista, the eight are identified as Glicerio Santos Jr., Radel Cortez, Bienvenido Santiago Sr., Mathusalem Pareja, Rolando Esguerra, Eraño Codera, Rodelio Cabrerra and Maximo Bularan.) The nightmare happened because Samson was suspected of being the whistle-blower Ebangelista, and it ended only when the family escaped.

“Mr. Eduardo V. Manalo (EVM) is an oppressor and violator of human rights of anyone who dares criticize him. This is why all members of the INC are required to be ‘One with EVM’ and to strictly adhere to the church mantra of ‘Obey and Never Complain!" - Lowell Mecorca III

INC expands in Africa
Published December 8, 2016, 10:00 PM Manila Bulletin
By Chito A. Chavez

The Iglesia Ni Cristo (INC) has added new churches in Africa emphasizing that “faith, solidarity, selflessness and mutual understanding in the face of local and global challenges” are more important than ever as 2016 ends.

Speaking at the INC Central Headquarters in Quezon City, INC General Auditor Glicerio Santos admitted that it has been a challenging year for the religious group but it hurdled all the obstacles with the group becoming stronger and more unified.

The INC has reached sixteen countries in the African continent in 2016.

Santos noted that two new chapels were dedicated and eight more are slated to be opened next year as conversions and baptisms have been particularly aggressive in South Africa and Kenya.

“Baptism is the final act before one becomes a member. We’ve had thousands of baptisms in Africa, and these involve locals, not Filipinos based in the continent.” Santos added.

African equivalents of the “Lingap sa Mamamayan” (Aid for Humanity) outreach programs were held in King Williams Town, Johannesburg and Ladybrand in South Africa, Nairobi and Kiberia in Kenya, and Maseru and Semongkong in Lesotho.

Manila Standard: 2 Manalos appeal for Red Cross help

EDUARDO V. MANALO - INC™ EXECUTIVE MINISTER (Photo source: Philippine Pride)

November 24, 2016 at 10:00 pm by
Manila Standard

TWO scions of Iglesia Ni Cristo founder Felix Manalo appealed to Red Cross chairman Senator Richard Gordon for humanitarian assistance to ease their living conditions at a disputed property in Quezon City.

Felix Nathaniel “Angel” Manalo and his sister Lottie Manalo, estranged siblings of incumbent Iglesia Ni Cristo Executive Minister Eduardo V. Manalo, wrote Gordon seeking assistance in alleviating their current living conditions at the disputed number 36 Tandang Sora residence.

The two Manalos claimed inhuman conditions are being imposed on them and their household staff, such as the limitation of food and water supplies, the cutting of electricity and water supplies and the setting up of high walls of corrugated sheets around their respective homes and around their compound.

They said their freedom of movement and right to meet with their counsel lawyer Rene Saguisag have been impeded by the security that were positioned around the compound.

The Commission on Human Rights, headed by Chairman Chito Gascon, has been powerless against the lawyers of the Iglesia Ni Cristo despite repeated calls for their assistance in the matter.

Homes of former Executive Minister Erano G. Manalo and other relatives living in the compound have been demolished by the Iglesia Ni Cristo, leading to speculations that the property in dispute is set to be sold by the Church.

Supporters of Angel and Lottie have been trying to provide food, water and medicines for the incarcerated Manalo and household staff but have been prevented by strict security policies enforced by the Iglesia.

They also cited that only a 71-year-old man, the father-in-law of Angel Manalo, is allowed to supply both homes the limited supplies allowed in by the security people within and around the Tandang Sora compound.

Currently, the property is being claimed by both Lottie Manalo Hemedez and the Iglesia Ni Cristo.

In their letter to Gordon, they sought the urgent and immediate assistance of the Red Cross based on humanitarian grounds to alleviate the conditions within the compound where electricity and water utilities have been absent for nearly four months.

This despite an order from a Quezon City Judge to transfer the possession of the meters for the immediate reconnection of the basic services.

In a recent radio interview with Senator Gordon, regarding the plight of the Manalo siblings, he said “that he will seek into the matter and will try to help them.”

Iglesia marks 61st birthday of Eduardo Manalo
Philippine Daily Inquirer / November 13, 2016

The Iglesia ni Cristo (INC) will mark the 61st birthday of executive minister Eduardo V. Manalo today with the launch of its 2017 theme, “I am proud to be a member of the INC,” rallying its millions of members around a call that seeks to highlight the progress that the Church and its faithful have made since the Church’s humble beginnings in Sta. Ana, Manila. INC general auditor Glicerio B. Santos Jr. in a statement said the new theme is in line with the Church’s expansion programs, and seeks to inspire its members to reach out and share their faith with nonmembers.

“The INC has witnessed unprecedented growth under Ka Eduardo—1,642 chapels, and 74 of these are located outside the country. We now have a presence in every continent in the world,” he said. The INC has congregations worldwide. It also has congregations in 130 countries and territories in six continents. Established in 1914 by its first executive minister, Felix Y. Manalo, the INC has become one of the biggest and fastest-growing churches in the country and the world.

Court orders eviction of INC leader's siblings from QC property
ABS-CBN News
Posted at Jun 19 2016

MANILA - A Metropolitan Trial Court (MTC) has ordered the two siblings of Iglesia Ni Cristo (INC) chief Eduardo V. Manalo from a property of the religious sect in Tandang Sora, Quezon City.

The Manila MTC Branch 12 ruled in favor of the INC's ejectment suit against Manalo's siblings, expelled INC members Felix Nathaniel "Angel" Manalo and Lolita "Lottie" Manalo-Hemedez.

In a six-page decision, Judge Ann Sia of the Manila MTC Branch 12 said the expelled INC members are illegally residing in the church's property in 36 Tandang Sora.

In a press conference on Saturday, INC spokesperson Edwin Zabala said the estranged siblings of the sect's executive minister lost the privilege to live in the property when they were expelled in July 2015.

INC lawyer Moises Tolentino explained: "The privilege had already been terminated when they were expelled from the church, having committed some serious relation of the church doctrines."

"The decision says that they are ordered to immediately vacate and surrender possession of the premises to the plaintiff which is the INC. If they do not do it on their own, we will be compelled to file a motion for execution which we intend to do next week and have it heard by the court," Tolentino added.

Zabala also believes the siblings posed a threat to INC, noting that security personnel at the Tandang Sora property intercepted hearing devices, wire and parts of a drone which were supposedly delivered to Lottie and Angel.

He said the items were allegedly concealed in food deliveries and packages from the visitors of the siblings.

Lottie, Angel and their mother Cristina were expelled from INC after appearing in a YouTube video and claiming that their lives were in danger and that some ministers have allegedly been abducted.

How TRUE is this??? [Sipi mula sa Facebook: Exposing the Iglesia Ni Cristo Cult of Manalo]

The situation with the family of Brother Eraño G. Manalo continues to escalate. A lot has happened since the last entry was posted. The brethren that chose to stay around and help the family are not only harassed and persecuted but are now expelled. Many have lost their homes.

During a very recent video ministerial conference, Brother Eduardo admitted that he doesn't like to get angry and because of this, he delegates people to do it for him. This statement is disturbing especially coming from a religious leader and it confirms that he is allowing these ministers to launch various attacks against Ka Tenny and her children. As we are all witnessing, the results of his decision are detrimental to the lives of his own mother and siblings. He has given authority to a group of high ranking ministers to do as they please to deal with his mother and siblings.

For over three years now, there have been cars and motorcycles that are instructed to follow and harass the family wherever they go. The drivers of the vehicles are becoming more aggressive as to provoke the families into accidents. There are District Ministers that are using their political influence and are now coordinating with outside organizations to follow the family of Brother Eraño G. Manalo in an unfriendly malicious way. This is a serious and very real threat to their lives, and the very people who they would turn to, to help them are the very people behind these events. So they earnestly plead for help from our Almighty God as there is no one else they can turn to. That is why they have no choice but to call on the brethren for help. With the people in the administration having influence politically, they are taking advantage of the teaching that brethren cannot sue brethren. They feel they have the right to do anything they please like for example: stalking, intimidation and harassment. This is abuse of power. God did not put them in their duties to abuse their powers to persecute brethren. He put them there to lead His people to righteousness. This does not mean they have the right to do anything they so desire. We are all under the law of God.

Even brethren that express concern and prayers are now being threatened with expulsion. Who are behind these threats and decisions? Who are the people who benefit most from this schism that is continuously being instigated? There is a group of people that are causing this division and doing everything in their power to make sure the family stay divided. This is not the spirit of Christ.

Are there doubts looming in your minds to the authenticity of these blog postings? Some are saying they want to wait for an “official circular” to confirm or deny these postings. If there is an official response regarding this matter, it will be a sanitized biased response that only defends and reflects the administration in power. They will only tell you their side of the story and of course it will conveniently be in their favor.

It is true, that God did place them to administer the Church, but that does not mean they have the right to violate any rights of the members. It does not mean they have the authority to do anything they want. They should be the first to follow the commandments of God, not abuse their authority.

Please reflect on these words. Ask yourself if all their actions are biblical. Not only the hostile acts against Brother EGM’s family, but the many changes that we are all witnessing in the Church. Are the changes really for God’s glory? Please think hard. We became members of this Church because all our doctrines and beliefs had very clear and concise explanations. Everything was spoken for with transparency. Where is that transparency now?

Brethren, the administration has strayed from God’s teachings. It is becoming undeniably more evident as the days pass. An administration that condones violence is not under the guidance of God. Our almighty God is not a God of division and confusion. Our Almighty God is a God of unity and love. Where did all of that go? Why does the corruption in the Church continue to worsen as more questions are left unanswered? Why are innocent people’s lives being threatened? We should not condone this kind of behavior.

We cannot turn our heads the other way and deny the wrong being done. If we do, we will be held responsible to God for knowing what is right and supporting an administration who continues in their evil ways.

They need your help. You must not allow this kind of abuse to continue:

“Remember, it is sin to know what you ought to do and then not do it.” (James 4:17 N.I.V.)
